STAND UP, SPEAK OUT: BULLYING IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS
By Dr. Lilian Matovu
Welcome, and thank you for visiting our site.
Today, we want to share a message that matters to every student, teacher, and parent: Bullying is not just a school issue — it’s a life issue.
Bullying Happens — But It Shouldn’t
Every day, students walk into school carrying invisible weight. Some carry fear. Some carry shame. Some carry the memory of yesterday’s cruel words or today’s silent stares. This is the reality of bullying — and it’s happening in secondary schools across the world.
Bullying can be physical, verbal, emotional, or digital. It can come in the form of a shove in the hallway, a nasty message online, or even being constantly ignored by a group. And the worst part? Too often, it’s overlooked or brushed off as “just part of growing up.”
Let’s be clear: Bullying is not a rite of passage. It is a violation of someone’s dignity.
THE IMPACT IS REAL
Bullying doesn’t just leave bruises — it leaves lasting scars. It affects self-esteem, academic performance, mental health, and relationships. Victims may feel alone, anxious, or even unsafe in a place that’s supposed to be for learning and growth.
And it’s not only the victims who are affected — bystanders, bullies, and entire communities are impacted. A school with unchecked bullying becomes a place of fear, not of opportunity.
WE ALL HAVE A ROLE TO PLAY
Ending bullying starts with one decision: to care.
Whether you’re a student, teacher, parent, or friend — you can help stop bullying by:
Speaking up when you see or hear it happening.
Supporting those who are being targeted.
Refusing to be a bystander — silence often fuels the bully.
Creating safe spaces where everyone feels seen, heard, and respected.
Thank you.
